A little over a month ago Chris received a call from our friend Nash to tell him that his summer wedding had been moved to march. Location was also moved, it would no longer be in Texas but in Colorado. We wouldn't have missed it for the world -of course- but it was too late to find good airfares; we went for the more wallet-friendly option and made it a road trip.
With no vacation left it wasn't possible to take a day off which put us on the road on friday afternoon at around 3:45. This was last friday, march 18th. I had forgotten how big and flat Kansas is because the last time I crossed the state from east to west was about 8 years ago with some friends from college, back then I was still very new to this country so my perception of distances wasn't sharp yet. Still, looking back at the drive it wasn't as long as we thought it would be, and the gorgeous sunset helped. Made it there by 11:00 (MT).
We knew we wouldn't have much time to explore Colorado Springs so we got up semi-early on saturday morning and drove to "The Garden of the Gods", about 20 miles away from where we were staying at. Beautiful place. Enjoyed the view, took some pictures, and went back to the city for some lunch before going back to the hotel to get all pretty and drive up to Green mountain for the ceremony.
The ceremony was outside, in a Gazebo located in the middle of a half-frozen small lake sorrounded by leafless trees and filled with geese. The sun was out but it wasn't very warm and the wind didn't give us a break. I can't say I expected anything different being in the middle of the mountains and all. After that we drove down to an old and charming Estate with beautiful gardens for the reception. We never lost the amazing view, the slightly-icy mountains were seen from wherever we stood at (we need to order some for KC, then again it wouldnt be KC anymore).
It was not only great to finally meet Mikayla and realize she is perfect for Nash (they look so happy together) but also share moments with Nash's family who we hadn't seen in a few years. His parents, Bill & Karen, are such lovely people with an equaly lovely family. After a few glasses of good wine, good food and some dancing the whole event was over. Bride and groom are happy husband and wife now.
We had gotten used to traveling to these matrimonial events in a “pack” like we did to MN in 2008 and NC in 2009. The after-party moments always sponsor some laugh-worthy pictures. Too bad the Olsons and Houses couldn't make it. Sunday morning we drove back to KC with the mountains in the rearview mirror and another memory to share. Congratulations Nash and Mikayla!
I love road trips with you, it doesn't matter if it's Costco or Colorado. I just love them!
